Privacy policy

This page explains what information Shared collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Shared mobile app and this website.

1. Information we collect

1.1 Account information

When you sign up we store your name, email, phone number, and (optionally) gender. Your phone number is verified via a one-time code sent to your device.

1.2 Location

We collect device location to:

  • Auto-fill your pickup point when creating or booking a ride.
  • Show your live position to riders who have an accepted booking on your trip.
  • Match passenger search to trips whose route passes near them.

Location is only collected when the app is in use. You can revoke this permission from your phone's settings at any time.

1.3 Trip and booking data

We store the trips you create, the bookings you make, vehicle details you add, and the addresses you've used. This data is needed to operate the service and is shared between matched drivers and passengers (e.g. a driver sees the rider's name and pickup address; a rider sees the driver's name, vehicle, and live position).

1.4 Technical data

We log basic technical information (device model, OS version, app version, network type, request timestamps) to debug crashes and detect abuse.

2. How we use your information

  • To run the ride-sharing service — matching trips, sending booking notifications, processing cancellations.
  • To enforce safety rules (auto-cancel stale trips, one active trip per driver, KYC checks).
  • To respond to your support requests.
  • To improve the app — bug fixes, performance tuning, feature decisions.

3. Sharing your information

We share information only when necessary:

  • With matched users — the driver and passenger on a single trip see each other's name, vehicle (driver side) and pickup waypoint (passenger side).
  • With service providers — Google Maps (for geocoding, routing, and maps); secure cloud hosting for our database.
  • With authorities — only when required by Indian law (e.g. a valid court order or law-enforcement request).

We do not sell your data to advertisers or third-party brokers.

4. Data retention

Account, trip, and booking records are kept for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we anonymise or remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal, accounting, or safety reasons (e.g. trip records for tax purposes).

5. Your rights

  • View and edit your profile from the Personal Information screen in the app.
  • Request a copy of your data by emailing privacy@shared.app.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data.
  • Revoke location, notification, or camera permissions from your phone settings.

6. Security

Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes. Authentication uses signed JWT tokens with a 7-day expiry. Network traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with TLS. We restrict internal access to production data on a need-to-know basis.

7. Children

Shared is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us so we can remove it.

8. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll notify you in-app and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after a change means you accept the updated policy.
